The settlement of Connecticut began in the 1630s, even though both the English and Dutch claimed the region. The "Fundamental Orders" of 1638 are reputed to be the first written constitution that created a governning body based on the consent of the people. To celebrate this fact the Connecticut assembly declared "Constitution State" to be the state's official nickname. Long known as the "Land of Steady Habits" because of the deeply pious and industrious residents, Connecticut is more commonly known today as the "Nutmeg State," a name that originates with merchants like Stone who travelled around the colonies selling nutmeg.
