The peace treaty of 1782 and the subsequent Jay's Treaty of 1794 roughly determined the borders between British North America and the United States. Many areas, including much of the western frontier and the forested region north of Maine, remained in dispute. In reality the borders meant little to the settlers and pioneers who travelled freely and ignored political boundaries.
